Our School

Wherwell School is a small rural school in an exceptional setting on the banks of the River Test. Originally opened in 1929 to serve the villages of Wherwell, Chilbolton, Fullerton and Newton Stacey, we now welcome children from many of the surrounding villages and Andover. Currently, around half of our pupils come from outside our catchment area. There are currently 126 children on roll accommodated in five classes.

Our school hours are 8.40am to 3.10pm

At Wherwell, we offer a broad, varied and engaging curriculum which is planned on a two-year cycle to cater for the mixed-age groups. The children have access to numerous resources that will enhance their learning, including a kitchen - where children can learn to prepare their own meals - laptops, iPads and extensive sports equipment and facilities. We have a very well-stocked spacious library run by our dedicated staff librarian assisted by Pupil Librarians. Music is an integral part of school life. We have a specialist music teacher for whole class teaching. In addition, we have visiting teachers of violin, cello, brass, guitar and woodwind. We offer the children recorder groups, an orchestra and a choir. In addition, we subscribe to the Hampshire Music Service project, Listen2Me, which gives Year 3/4 children an opportunity to learn a different instrument each term. We also offer Out of School child care from 8 am (Mon -Fri) and in the afternoon until 6 pm (Mon —Thurs).

Learning does not stop at the classroom door. We have a large outdoor classroom for use throughout the year. Adjacent to our school, we have approximately 1.5 acres of woodland, which can be used by the children not only for Forest School and nature learning, but also Art, Maths, Music and Science - wherever the curriculum can be enhanced by a visit to the outdoors!

The children take part in a wide variety of sporting activities, both in school and in tournaments with other schools. All children are given the opportunity to play tag-rugby, football, tri-golf, basketball, cricket, netball as well as taking part in cross-country, hockey, athletics, new age curling and swimming. We welcome many visitors to the school as well as having a lively programme of outside excursions both locally and further afield.
